Is humidifier causing indoor air quality issues?« Back to Previous Page

Since we got the new humidifier last month, I’ve noticed a strange odor coming from my bedroom, especially at night. The smell is somewhat metallic and it’s making me feel light-headed. My kids have been complaining of coughing fits too, even though they don’t seem to have caught anything contagious. Could this be related to indoor air quality? What should I do?

The smell you're experiencing could indeed be related to indoor air quality. Given the metallic odor and its presence at night, it's possible that your humidifier might be causing issues. In Dubai and across UAE, there are specific guidelines regarding indoor air quality which you should consider.

Firstly, check if your humidifier needs maintenance or cleaning. Buildup of minerals, mold, or bacteria in a humidifier can lead to unpleasant odors and affect air quality. It's important to clean the reservoir, replace any filters, and ensure that the humidifier is properly disinfected before use. In UAE, it’s recommended to do this every week during operation.

Secondly, ensure that your home is well-ventilated. Even with a humidifier, proper ventilation can help reduce moisture levels which may be contributing to mold growth or other issues. Open windows when you can and consider using exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens where humidity tends to accumulate more easily.

If the problem persists despite maintenance of your equipment and good ventilation practices, it might be time for a professional inspection. In Dubai, regulations require that all buildings maintain indoor air quality that is safe and healthy for occupants. A professional environmental inspector can help identify the source of the odor and provide remediation solutions tailored to your specific situation.
