Is increased dust harmful to kids?« Back to Previous Page

After the recent construction next door, I’ve noticed a persistent layer of dust settling on our furniture and even in corners we rarely clean. It’s particularly bad in the living room where my kids spend most of their time playing. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this increase in dust, especially since they started coughing more frequently. How urgent is this issue, and what can I do to minimize exposure?

The increased dust levels in your home could indeed pose some risks to the health of your kids. In Dubai and across the UAE, building regulations often mandate stringent standards for construction practices but once the work is complete, there can still be lingering dust that may impact indoor air quality.

Dust can contain a variety of particles from the construction site like silica, asbestos fibers, or other allergens which could exacerbate respiratory issues. Your kids experiencing more frequent coughing might suggest an increase in irritants they're exposed to. Since you've lived here for 2 years and only recently noticed this issue, it's likely related to the new construction next door.

In terms of health concerns, dust can lead to irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat; trigger asthma attacks; and contribute to other respiratory illnesses. Children are more vulnerable due to their smaller airways and higher breathing rates compared to adults. The prolonged exposure could also impact their developing immune systems.

To minimize your kids' exposure to this dust, you might want to take some precautionary steps. First off, ensure they stay inside during times of high outdoor dust levels or immediately after construction work. Keep windows closed if possible, and use air purifiers with HEPA filters to help clean the indoor air. Regularly cleaning your home – especially the living room where your kids spend a lot of time – can also make a difference.

Given that you’ve noticed this issue only recently and it correlates with the new construction work next door, I’d recommend having an environmental inspection done by professionals who are familiar with local regulations. This will help determine if there's any risk from the dust and what steps should be taken to mitigate it.

If you decide to proceed with a professional inspection, feel free to call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for assistance. Remember that early action can prevent more serious health issues down the line.

Taking these measures could help safeguard your kids' health and ensure they continue to enjoy their playtime in a dust-free environment.
