Is mold causing my kids' persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled out some winter clothes from the back of the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a bunch of them covered in black and green fuzzy spots. We live in an older building in Deira and the room always feels a bit damp. Is this type of mold dangerous and what’s the fastest way to get it professionally cleaned and make sure it doesn’t come back?

Mold exposure can certainly cause persistent coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy symptoms in children, who are often more sensitive. The dampness you describe in your Deira building is a classic breeding ground. The fuzzy black and green spots you found indicate active growth, which releases spores into the air you and your children are breathing.

The fastest way to address this is a two-step professional process. First, a certified inspector should conduct a thorough assessment, including air quality testing, to identify all moisture sources and the mold species present. This is critical, as some types are more problematic than others. In Dubai's climate, the source is often a combination of high humidity, building envelope leaks, or condensation from AC systems. The remediation company will then contain the area, safely remove the contaminated materials (like those clothes), and use specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and air scrubbers to clean the air and surfaces.

To prevent recurrence, the underlying moisture issue must be fixed. This could involve repairing leaks, improving ventilation in the wardrobe, or using a dehumidifier. For a permanent solution, prioritize companies that provide before-and-after lab reports to verify the spore count has been returned to safe levels, as this is the only way to confirm the cleanup was effective.
