Is mold from AC causing my kids' allergies?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains we had a few weeks ago, I noticed mold growing in the corners of the children's bedroom. The AC unit also seems to be leaking some moisture, creating damp spots on the ceiling. This is really concerning since my kids have been showing signs of allergies and coughing more lately. Could this be related to the cleaning issues we’re having? What steps should I take to address these problems before they get worse?

Absolutely, the mold from your AC system could very well be contributing to your kids' allergies. In the UAE, especially during summer and post-rain periods like you've experienced, it’s quite common for humidity levels to rise and create an environment conducive to mold growth. The AC unit leaking moisture can indeed lead to damp spots on ceilings which are prime locations for mold to flourish.

Firstly, I recommend calling 800-MOLDS or emailing hello@saniservice.com for a professional inspection. They can assess the extent of the mold growth and provide guidance on how to safely clean and prevent future issues in line with UAE regulations. According to the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), it is crucial that any remediation work follows strict guidelines to ensure it doesn’t exacerbate indoor air quality.

In the meantime, here are some steps you can take:

1. Check and Clean the AC Unit: Ensure your AC system is clean and well-maintained. Replace or wash filters regularly, and consider having a professional inspect ductwork for any blockages or moisture issues.
2. Ventilation: Increase ventilation in the bedroom to reduce humidity levels. Use fans or open windows when possible, but be mindful of external pollutants like dust.
3. Dry Damp Spots Promptly: If you notice damp spots on the ceiling, clean them with a solution of water and bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) and ensure they are completely dry before painting.
4. Humidity Control: Consider using dehumidifiers in high-risk areas like the children’s bedroom to keep humidity levels below 60%.
5. Dust Regularly: Dusting frequently can help reduce allergens. Use microfiber cloths which trap more dust than conventional ones.

Remember, the health of your family should be top priority. If symptoms persist after taking these steps, consulting a healthcare professional is advised to rule out other potential causes and ensure appropriate treatment.

By addressing this issue proactively, you can significantly improve the indoor environment for your children, potentially alleviating their allergy symptoms.
