Is mold making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a musty smell in the basement where my son's room is located. It’s gotten progressively worse over the past few weeks, and now there seems to be a visible greenish-black mold growing on the wall behind his bed. My kids have been complaining of itchy eyes and coughing, which has me really worried about their health. Could this be due to the mold? What should I do first?

Is mold making your kids sick? It's very possible. The symptoms they're experiencing could indeed be caused by the mold in their room. In Dubai and the UAE, we often see increased moisture due to humidity or after rainfall, which can lead to mold growth especially in basements and areas with poor ventilation.

Mold produces spores that can trigger allergic reactions like itchy eyes, runny nose, and coughing. For children, who are more sensitive to environmental factors, the risk of developing respiratory issues is higher. It's essential to address this issue promptly for their health and well-being.

Firstly, don't ignore those symptoms - act fast! We recommend calling 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 (Saniservice) right away for a professional mold inspection. They will assess the extent of the problem and provide remediation services if necessary.

In the meantime, avoid letting your kids go into that room as much as possible. Keep windows closed to prevent further moisture from entering the area. Use dehumidifiers or air purifiers with HEPA filters in the affected room to help reduce airborne mold spores.

If you decide not to call a professional and want to tackle it yourself, start by wearing protective gear like gloves, masks, and goggles before cleaning. Mix a solution of 1 cup bleach with one gallon of water and apply it to the moldy areas. Let it sit for five minutes, then scrub gently and rinse thoroughly. Make sure to ventilate well after cleaning.

However, remember that DIY solutions are often temporary fixes. Mold can be tricky and may reoccur if the underlying moisture issues aren't addressed. A thorough inspection by professionals will ensure a comprehensive solution to prevent future occurrences.

Don't let this situation go unattended - your kids' health is paramount. Saniservice has years of experience dealing with mold in Dubai and can help you regain a safe environment for your family.
