Is moldy AC causing our cough and allergies?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Park seems to be blowing out a weird, damp odor that’s been getting worse over the last month. My youngest has developed a constant cough and my own allergies are going crazy, even though we’re inside all the time. I pulled the unit's filter and the inside of the vent looks dark and dusty, almost like it’s moldy.
Is this definitely a dirty coil causing our health issues, and how urgently do I need to get a professional cleaning service in?

A dirty evaporator coil is very likely the source of that damp odor and your family's symptoms. In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and year-round AC use, coils stay constantly wet, trapping dust and organic debris to create a perfect breeding ground for mold and bacteria. This contaminated air is then blown directly into your living space, which commonly causes the respiratory irritation, coughing, and allergy flare-ups you're experiencing.
Given the visible dark dust and the onset of health symptoms, you should treat this with urgency. A professional inspection is strongly recommended, as a surface-level cleaning won't address microbial growth deep within the coil fins or the drain pan. For a proper resolution, the service must include an EPA-approved disinfectant applied to the coil and a thorough flushing of the condensate drain line to remove the biological sludge. The difference is verifiable results; a reputable provider can show you before-and-after evidence of the contamination removed. While not a Dubai-specific regulation, best practice for maintenance in this environment is a full system clean every 12-18 months to prevent this exact issue. In severe cases with health impacts, waiting even a few weeks can prolong exposure. Focus on finding a service that performs a deep clean and can explain the process clearly, rather than a quick spray-and-wipe, to ensure the environment for mold is eliminated. |
