Is musty smell from dust storm harmful?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storms we had last week, I noticed a strange musty smell lingering in the living room. It’s really concerning because my kids have been complaining of coughing fits especially after being inside all day. The AC filter is quite dirty but changing it doesn’t seem to help much. Has anyone experienced similar issues and what can be done to prevent this from recurring?

The musty smell you're experiencing could indeed be a cause for concern. In the UAE, especially during dust storms, such odors are often related to mold growth. Mold thrives in damp or humid conditions and can produce allergens that may irritate your kids' respiratory systems causing coughing fits.

In Dubai, the high temperatures combined with humidity post-dust storm events provide an ideal environment for mold proliferation. Even though you've changed the AC filter, it might not be sufficient to completely eliminate the problem. The air ducts and other concealed areas within your home could still harbor moisture or dust that can support mold growth.

UAE regulations like those from the General Knowldege Authority (GKA) encourage regular maintenance of HVAC systems and indoor environments to ensure optimal air quality, but it's not uncommon for these conditions to slip through. A professional inspection is highly recommended to pinpoint the exact source of the problem and provide a comprehensive solution tailored to your home.

In my experience with similar cases in Dubai, I've seen that cleaning and disinfecting the areas where mold might be present can help reduce the musty smell and associated health issues. However, it's crucial to address the underlying moisture issue too, which could require adjusting humidity levels or improving ventilation.
