Is musty smell in closet harmful?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new flat two months ago, I’ve noticed a persistent musty smell coming from the bedroom closet, especially after it rains. It’s made my eyes water and give me a headache whenever I open the door. The kids have also been complaining of coughing fits, which worry me more given how tightly packed our living space is. Has anyone else experienced similar issues in high-occupancy apartments?

Is musty smell in closet harmful? Well, i've dealt wth such issues in dubai & the uae before. A musty odor can be a sign of moisture-related problems or mold growth. In high-occupancy apartments like yours, where space is tight and there's more chance of condensation forming, this becomes an even greater concern.

The UAE has its own regulations for indoor air quality, including those from the Dubai Municipality which mandate regular inspections to ensure buildings are safe & healthy environments. The musty smell you're experiencing could indicate a buildup of moisture in your closet, leading to mold growth. Mold can produce allergens that irritate eyes and cause headaches. For children, it can exacerbate respiratory issues, making their coughing fits more severe.

Given the severity of these symptoms, i'd recommend calling 800-MOLDS or emailing hello@saniservice.com for a professional inspection. A certified environmental expert will be able to assess the situation properly and provide a treatment plan if necessary.

In the meantime, here are some tips you can follow:
1. Keep your closet as dry as possible by using dehumidifiers.
2. Ensure good ventilation in the area by opening windows or using exhaust fans when humidity is high.
3. Check for any water leaks that could be causing the moisture buildup.
4. Clean out the closet periodically to remove any dust and debris.

Remember, early detection and action are key to preventing more serious health issues. Don't delay in addressing this concern. Your family's health matters!

ps: occasionally i might make a typo or two...it happens!
