Is poor AC performance due to dust storm damage?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to struggle even more than usual during these dust storms. Just last night, the storm was so bad that I could see the dust swirling through our living room, and it’s barely been a week since we moved into this new place. It's concerning because my son has been coughing quite a bit lately, and I’m not sure if it’s from the storm or something else. Do you think I need to call in an HVAC expert to fix the AC, or is there something I can do myself?

Dust storms can indeed have quite the impact on your AC system and indoor air quality. In the UAE, especially in Dubai, dust storms are a common occurrence, often leading to significant challenges for both HVAC systems and overall comfort inside buildings.

When a dust storm hits, it's not uncommon for the air filters in your AC unit to become clogged with particulates such as sand, dust, and other debris. This can lead to reduced efficiency of your air conditioning system, causing it to work harder than usual to maintain the desired temperature. In your case, since you're experiencing more strain on the AC and seeing dust swirling through your living room, it's quite possible that these stormy conditions have taken a toll.

For someone like you who has recently moved into a new apartment, it’s understandable to be concerned about the health implications of such storms. Dust storms can introduce allergens and irritants into indoor spaces, affecting those with respiratory issues or allergies. Your son's cough could indeed be related to these factors. However, it's important to also consider other potential causes like mold growth in damp conditions or even just dryness.

Given your situation, I would recommend a couple of steps:

Firstly, clean the air filters in your AC unit thoroughly. This can often significantly improve its performance and reduce the load on the system. Make sure you follow proper safety guidelines when handling the filters, especially if you suspect any dust or debris might be harmful to breathe.

Secondly, check for any visible damage to the exterior of your HVAC equipment during and after a storm. In Dubai, some storms can carry strong winds that may lead to loose panels or other issues on your AC unit.

If these steps don’t alleviate your concerns, it would be wise to call in an HVAC professional for a thorough inspection. The regulations and standards in the UAE, like those set by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MoID), require regular maintenance and servicing of such systems, especially during harsh weather conditions.
