Is poor air quality making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be running extra hard lately, but it doesn't seem to be cooling the space as well as it used to. Over the past few days, my kids have been complaining of runny noses and coughing more than usual, especially after they play in our living room. Could this be related to the indoor air quality? Any tips on how to improve it would be greatly appreciated.

Yep, it seems like the poor air quality could be linked to your kids' symptoms. The AC running extra hard and not cooling well might indicate that there's a build-up of dust, mold spores, or other particulates which can irritate respiratory passages especially in young ones.
In Dubai, indoor air quality is quite important due to the high temperatures during summer and the reliance on air conditioning systems. Dust mites, pet dander, pollen from outside (especially if you have open windows), and even VOCs from household products can all contribute to poor air quality. First step would be to take a peek at your AC unit. Check for visible signs of mold or dust accumulation in the filters and evaporator coil. If it looks like there's a lot of dirt, consider replacing the filters and cleaning the coils thoroughly. This might help reduce allergens that could be contributing to your kids' discomfort. Secondly, increase humidity control. High humidity can lead to mold growth, which is not uncommon here in Dubai. Make sure your AC dehumidifies properly or use a dedicated dehumidifier if necessary. Keeping relative humidity between 40-60% would be ideal for reducing mold and dust mite proliferation. Regularly clean surfaces in the living room where your kids play. Dust can accumulate quickly on furniture, books, and toys. Using damp cloths to wipe down these areas can help reduce airborne particles. Ventilation is key too. Even though ACs are efficient here, occasional cross-ventilation with windows or even opening doors for short periods can bring in fresh air and help reduce indoor pollutants. Just ensure you monitor the outdoor pollution levels before doing so as Dubai's AQI might not always be at its best.
