Is shower grout mold a DIY fix or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my Jumeirah villa's master shower has started turning black, and I only really noticed it this morning under the bright bathroom lights. It's been getting more humid lately and I'm worried it might be mold spreading behind the tiles. What's the most effective way to clean this myself, or should I just call a professional company to handle it?

The black discoloration in your shower grout in Jumeirah is a common issue here in Dubai, primarily due to our high humidity levels and year-round AC usage, which creates persistent dampness—a perfect breeding ground for mold. While it may be surface-level mildew, it can also indicate a more serious moisture problem behind the tiles.

For a small, surface-level patch, a DIY approach can be attempted. Create a paste using baking soda and water or a diluted bleach solution (ensure the room is well-ventilated). Apply it to the grout, scrub with a stiff brush, and rinse thoroughly. However, this is often a temporary fix. The porous nature of grout means the mold's root system can remain, leading to rapid regrowth.

Given the climate and the potential for hidden damage, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. In serious cases, what you see is just the tip of the iceberg; moisture can be trapped within the wall, compromising the structure and creating an ongoing indoor air quality issue. Our company, Saniservice, specializes in such inspections. We use moisture meters and borescopes to non-invasively check for hidden mold and water damage, a critical step most DIY methods miss.

If the problem is widespread or keeps returning, professional remediation is necessary. We use industrial-grade, UAE-approved hygienization techniques to not only remove the visible mold but also treat the area to prevent recurrence, ensuring a healthy environment. For a definitive diagnosis and a lasting solution, it's best to call in experts.
