Is that green film on my ceiling mold?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a strange greenish film forming on the ceiling of the living room. My kids have been complaining about itchy eyes and sneezing fits, especially in the evenings when we spend more time inside. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this; could it be mold? What cleaning rules should I follow to address this issue safely?

The greenish film on your ceiling sounds concerning. Given the symptoms your kids are experiencing and the fact that it only just appeared after rain, yes, this could very well be mold. Mold thrives in damp environments, making it quite common to find it growing post-rainfall or other instances of excess moisture.

In the UAE, particularly Dubai, humidity levels can fluctuate, especially during the rainy season. This combined with poor ventilation can lead to mold growth, which is why I would recommend you take this issue seriously and act swiftly.

Firstly, assess the extent of the problem by taking photos from different angles and noting any areas where the green film appears. This will help in understanding if it's a localized issue or something more widespread.

Cleaning Mold Safely:
• Wear protective gear such as gloves, masks, and goggles to avoid inhaling spores.
• Use a mixture of bleach and water (1 part bleach to 9 parts water) for cleaning the affected area. Make sure you adequately ventilate the space during and after cleaning.
• Scrub the mold thoroughly with a stiff brush or sponge.

However, if the mold covers more than 10 square feet or is located in areas like your HVAC system or behind walls, it's best to call in professionals. In Dubai, there are strict regulations about indoor air quality, particularly concerning mold and other allergens. The Ministry of Community Development and Social Affairs (MCDSA) has guidelines that businesses and households should adhere to, especially when dealing with serious cases.

For residential properties like yours, I would recommend contacting a professional inspection and remediation service. Saniservice is one such company known for their expertise in this field. Their number is 800-MOLDS or you can email them at hello@saniservice.com for a thorough assessment and appropriate treatment plan.

In the meantime, try to keep the area dry by using dehumidifiers if necessary and ensure good air circulation. This could help prevent further mold growth until professional assistance arrives.

Remember, it's crucial not to ignore these signs as prolonged exposure to mold can lead to respiratory issues and other health problems for your family. Act quickly and consult a professional to ensure safety and proper resolution of the issue.
