Is the dust from construction harming my family?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy construction started next door about a month ago, my bedroom has been filled with a thick cloud of dust every time the wind blows. The windowsills are covered in a fine layer of it, even though we keep them closed. My kids have been complaining of coughing fits and I’m worried it might be from this constant dust. Is there anything specific I can do to protect my family’s health?

The dust from construction can definitely be harmful to your family's health. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, we've seen several cases where nearby construction activities have led to significant indoor air quality issues. The thick cloud of dust blowing in through even closed windows is a clear sign that your home’s air quality has been compromised.

Firstly, it's important to understand that this kind of dust can contain various particles, including silica, asbestos (though less common now), and other pollutants which could irritate the respiratory system and worsen existing conditions. Children are especially vulnerable as their immune systems are still developing and they breathe in a higher volume of air relative to their body size.

You should definitely consider calling 800-MOLDS or emailing hello@saniservice.com for a professional inspection. They can assess the situation, advise on proper measures to mitigate the dust, and monitor your home’s air quality if necessary. In the meantime, here are some practical steps you can take:

1. Seal Off Your Home: Use plastic sheeting to seal off your bedroom from other rooms to prevent further ingress of dust. Ensure that doors leading into this area are tightly closed.

2. Use High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filters: Consider installing or using HEPA filters in your home's air conditioning and ventilation systems. This can help capture fine particles, including dust and other allergens.

3. Wear Masks Indoors: When you're inside the house, especially when cleaning areas near windows, wear a mask to prevent inhaling the particulates. Look for masks with good filtration capabilities like N95 masks.

4. Keep Your Kids Indoors During Dusty Days: If construction activities are particularly intense and cause more dust in your area, try to keep children indoors during these times and limit their physical activity.

5. Regular Cleaning: Regularly clean surfaces using a damp cloth or mop to reduce the spread of dust. Vacuuming with HEPA filter vacuum cleaners can also be effective, but ensure you use one that captures fine particles.

6. Ventilation: While it might seem counterintuitive, opening windows slightly when there's no wind blowing in dust from outside can help improve air circulation and remove some indoor pollutants.

Remember to keep an eye on your family’s health. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare professional. The well-being of you and your family is paramount during such times.

Lastly, as a precautionary measure, always ensure that any remediation efforts are carried out by certified professionals who adhere to local regulations like those set forth by the Dubai Municipality for construction activities and dust management in residential areas.
