Is this slime on rocks harmful?« Back to Previous Page
|
After the heavy rainstorm we had last month, I noticed a strange slime growing on the rocks along the balcony rail at the far end. It looks like some kind of algae or mold, but I’m not sure. The smell isn’t too bad, but it’s definitely there and seems to get stronger when it’s humid outside. Has anyone else experienced something similar in Dubai? Any advice on how to clean and prevent this from happening again would be greatly appreciated.

Hello there! It sounds like the slime you're seeing is indeed algae or possibly mold. This isn't uncommon after heavy rainstorms and the increase of humidity can definitely exacerbate the growth. In Dubai, we've seen similar occurrences but it's always best to be cautious.
First off, it’s important to note that not all types of algae or mold are harmful, but some can be. Certain molds produce mycotoxins which could pose health risks, especially for those with allergies, asthma, or other respiratory issues. In the UAE, there aren't specific regulations regarding outdoor growth like this, but we do have guidelines to maintain indoor air quality and hygiene. To address your concern, it's a good idea to clean the area thoroughly. Start by wearing gloves and protective eyewear as you begin. Mix a solution of water and a mild detergent or a 1:10 solution of bleach and water (if mold is suspected) for cleaning. Scrub the affected areas with a brush and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing off with clean water. Afterwards, ensure proper ventilation to prevent future growth. Check if any gutters are clogged; debris can lead to dampness that fosters such growth. If your balcony is not well-ventilated or has poor drainage, these could be contributing factors as well. In terms of prevention, sealing the rocks with a waterproofing compound might help deter future growth. Also consider maintaining regular checks for any signs of moisture intrusion which may indicate structural issues needing professional attention. If you're unsure about what you’re dealing with or if the smell becomes too strong, it's recommended to have a professional inspection done. Here in Dubai, you can call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) for expert advice or email hello@saniservice.com. Remember, keeping your surroundings clean and dry is key! Stay proactive, and if you spot any unusual growth or odors, it’s always best to err on the side of caution. |
