Loud AC grinding noise: emergency or wait?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my master bedroom in my Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has started making a loud grinding noise whenever it kicks on. It’s been getting worse over the past three days and now it’s so loud it’s keeping us up at night. Is this something that needs an emergency call-out, or can it wait until regular maintenance hours tomorrow?

That grinding noise is likely a failing compressor or seized motor bearings, and it should be addressed urgently. Given Dubai's year-round reliance on AC and the high humidity, a complete system failure can quickly lead to indoor air quality issues like mould growth from stagnant, damp air.

While it may not require a middle-of-the-night emergency call, you should schedule a professional inspection first thing in the morning. Continuing to run the unit under that strain risks a catastrophic failure, which is far more costly to repair. For apartments in JVC, ensure the technician checks the entire unit, including the external condenser which accumulates significant dust and sand, a common contributor to mechanical wear.

The issue is almost certainly mechanical, not just a clogged filter. A qualified HVAC technician can diagnose whether it's a compressor issue, a problem with the fan motor, or debris in the blower assembly. Given the noise is severe and worsening, do not operate the unit until it has been inspected to prevent further damage.
