Loud AC rattling noise: DIY fix or call technician?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be making a loud rattling noise whenever it kicks on, and it’s been getting worse over the last few days. It’s coming from the unit in the ceiling of my master bedroom. Is this something I can fix myself by tightening a screw or cleaning a filter, or do I definitely need to call a technician for this?

A loud rattling noise from a ceiling AC unit is often a loose component, like a fan blade, motor mount, or a panel that has vibrated free. While a simple fix like tightening a visible screw is possible, the UAE's climate makes this a high-risk DIY attempt.

The constant operation, combined with high humidity and fine dust, accelerates wear and corrosion on internal parts. What sounds like a simple rattle could be a failing motor bearing or a compromised fan blade—issues that worsen with use and risk causing a complete unit failure. Attempting to access the internal components of a ceiling cassette unit without proper training and tools can also lead to personal injury or damage to the refrigerant lines, which is a costly repair.

For a noise that has developed and worsened over several days, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Technicians can safely access the unit, identify the root cause, and ensure it is resolved correctly. In Dubai, all AC work should be performed by a technician certified by Dubai Municipality or following DEWA regulations to ensure safety and compliance.
