Mold in AC causing our allergy symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Jumeirah has been making this weird dusty smell for the past couple of months, and ever since, my husband and I have been waking up with stuffy noses and sore throats. I just pulled the vent cover off in the master bedroom and the inside was completely black with what looks like thick dust and mold. Is this a common issue with older villas here and could it actually be causing these allergy-like symptoms we're having?

Based on your description, this is an extremely common and serious issue for villas in older Dubai neighborhoods like Jumeirah. The combination of high outdoor humidity, pervasive fine dust (sand), and year-round AC usage creates the perfect environment for microbial growth within the ductwork. The black substance you're seeing is almost certainly a mixture of accumulated dust, debris, and mold.

Yes, this is absolutely the cause of your allergy-like symptoms. When the AC blower kicks on, it aerosolizes these contaminants—including mold spores, bacteria, and dust mites—and distributes them directly into your breathing space while you sleep. This constant exposure leads to the chronic sinus congestion, sore throats, and respiratory irritation you are experiencing.

This is not an issue a simple filter change can fix. The contamination is deep within the system. In the UAE, proper duct cleaning is a regulated process. Dubai Municipality guidelines stipulate that it should be performed by certified professionals using high-powered vacuum collection units and agitation devices to safely contain and remove all contaminants, followed by a hygienization process to inhibit future growth.

I strongly recommend you stop using the system in the affected room and seek a professional indoor environmental quality inspection immediately. Our team at Saniservice specializes in this exact problem. We can conduct a thorough assessment, including possible air and swab sampling, to identify the specific contaminants and provide a definitive remediation plan.
