Mold in Dubai villa closet: DIY or professional fix?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. I'm worried about it spreading but have no idea what this costs to fix professionally here. Is this a job I can handle myself with a cleaner from ACE, or should I just call a professional company and what’s a reasonable price to expect for a small area like this?

A small patch of black mold in a closet is common here, especially during humid periods when condensation can form on cooler exterior walls. The first step is to identify and address the moisture source; it's often a small, unnoticed water leak from plumbing in the wall or condensation from an AC duct. Simply cleaning the visible mold won't stop it from returning if the underlying issue isn't fixed.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, a careful DIY approach can be sufficient if you're certain of the moisture source. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Clean the area with a dedicated mold remover or a solution of white vinegar and water. Discard any porous, affected items like cardboard boxes or fabrics. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry and improve air circulation in the closet.

However, professional assessment is strongly recommended. The visible patch might be just the surface of a larger problem within the wall cavity, which is common in villas. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside the wall for hidden growth and identify the exact moisture pathway. They can also take a sample for lab analysis to confirm the mold type, as some black molds can be more problematic for health than others.

The cost for a professional fix varies significantly based on the extent of the hidden damage. For a truly small, contained area, the price is often reasonable and focuses on targeted remediation and moisture correction. For larger issues, the scope and cost increase. The only way to get an accurate expectation is to request an on-site assessment and detailed quote from a certified remediation provider.
