Mold in Dubai villa: DIY or professional remediation needed?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from the last humid spell. It’s on the wall and seems to be spreading onto some of our clothes. I'm really worried about the health of my family and the cost of fixing this properly. For a job like this in a villa, should I just try to clean it myself with bleach, or is it absolutely necessary to call in a professional mold remediation company, and roughly how much would that cost?

Based on your description of a large, spreading patch of black mold on both the wall and your clothing in a Jumeirah villa, I strongly advise against a DIY approach and recommend you call a professional mold remediation company immediately. The presence of mold on porous materials like drywall and fabric, combined with its active growth, indicates a significant moisture issue that bleach cannot properly address. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the roots (hyphae) embedded within the material, leading to rapid regrowth.

The climate in Dubai is a primary factor here. Our year-round high humidity, coupled with dust and constant AC usage, creates a perfect environment for mold. The AC unit itself could be a source of the moisture problem if there is a leak or condensation issue. A professional inspection is absolutely necessary to identify the true source of the moisture to prevent it from returning after cleanup. For a villa of this size and value, improper handling can spread spores throughout the HVAC system, contaminating other areas and posing serious health risks to your family, including allergic reactions and respiratory issues.

For a job of this nature in a villa, professional remediation cost can vary significantly based on the extent of the infestation and the required repairs to the moisture source. However, for a contained area like a closet, you could be looking at a starting range of AED 2,000 to AED 5,000 for complete remediation, moisture source identification, and post-clearance testing to ensure the environment is safe.
