Moldy AC smell after sandstorm, who to call?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has started blowing this weird, damp, almost moldy smell every time it kicks on, and it’s been waking me up at night. We’re in a villa in Jumeirah and I first noticed it a few days ago after that massive sandstorm. I’ve already checked and replaced the air filter but it didn't help at all. What’s the most likely cause for this smell and who should I call to fix it properly?

The damp, moldy smell is likely microbial growth inside the AC unit, a common issue after a sandstorm. The fine dust and sand that infiltrated the system act as a food source, and when combined with the UAE's high humidity and condensation from the AC, it creates an ideal environment for mold and bacteria to flourish in the evaporator coil and drain pan.

Replacing the filter was a good first step, but it doesn't address contamination deep within the unit. The most effective solution is a professional AC deep cleaning. You should call a licensed HVAC technician or a specialized indoor environmental company. In Dubai, look for providers that hold a valid DED license and, crucially, can provide documented proof of cleaning, such as before-and-after photos of the internal coils or even microbial swab test results.

A proper cleaning involves dismantling the unit to access, sanitize, and steam-clean the evaporator coil and flush the condensate drain line to remove the biofilm causing the odor. Avoid companies that only offer a basic spray-through-the-vent service, as this is often insufficient for this type of problem. For a persistent smell after a sandstorm, this comprehensive approach is typically required to resolve it.
