Musty closet smell: dehumidifier fix or professional for leak?« Back to Previous Page

My walk-in closet in the bedroom has started giving off a weird, damp smell, especially in the mornings before the AC really kicks in. We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and this just started happening after the last bout of humidity. I’ve pulled everything out and cleaned the floors, but the smell comes back after a couple of days. Is this something I can fix with a dehumidifier or do I need to call a professional to check for a hidden leak?

That damp morning smell in your closet is a classic sign of excess moisture, a common issue in Dubai's high humidity. While a dehumidifier can help manage the general humidity level, it won't fix the source if there's a hidden problem.

First, check for a condensate drain line from your AC unit that might run near or through that closet wall. A small leak or a disconnected pipe can drip condensate into the wall cavity, creating a persistent damp smell. Also, inspect the exterior wall for hairline cracks in the plaster; Jumeirah's salty air can cause minor corrosion on AC units, and their condensate overflow can seep into walls.

If a thorough visual inspection reveals no obvious leak, the issue is likely behind the walls. In villas, this often stems from a poorly insulated cold water pipe sweating profusely in the void space or a breach in the building's vapor barrier. Both scenarios require a professional with a thermal imaging camera or a borescope to locate the exact moisture source without unnecessary demolition.

For a persistent smell that returns after cleaning, a professional assessment is the most effective course. They can identify if it's a simple condensation issue or something more serious, like microbial growth inside the wall cavity, which would require remediation.
