Musty closet smell near AC: hidden water leak?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet has this weird, stale smell that I just noticed when I was putting away laundry. It’s strongest in the corner near the outside wall and seems to get worse when the AC is running. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and this is the first time we’ve had this issue. Could this be a hidden water leak from the AC unit or something else?

Based on your description of a stale, musty smell in your Jumeirah villa's closet, strongest near an outside wall and worsening with AC operation, this is a classic symptom of a hidden issue that we frequently encounter in Dubai. The most probable cause is a clogged AC condensate drain line. The UAE's high humidity levels cause AC units to produce significant condensation. When the drain line is blocked, this water can back up and leak into adjacent walls or insulation, leading to dampness and mold growth, which produces that distinct musty odor. This is especially common in closets on external walls where the AC ducting or drainage is often routed.
Other potential causes could be a leak from the AC unit's internal drip pan or, less likely, a breach in the building envelope allowing humid air to condense within the wall cavity. The persistent dust storms can also contribute to microbial growth in ductwork if not regularly cleaned. I strongly recommend a professional inspection. DIY attempts often miss the source. Our technicians use specialized tools like borescopes to inspect inside walls and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact location and extent of the dampness without unnecessary damage. Identifying and rectifying the source is critical, as prolonged moisture can lead to structural damage and impact indoor air quality.
