Rattling AC noise: DIY fix or call a technician?« Back to Previous Page

My AC unit in the living room has been making a rattling noise every time it kicks on, and it’s been getting worse over the last two weeks. I’m worried it might break down completely right before summer really hits. Is this something I can fix myself by cleaning the filters and checking the external unit on my balcony, or is this a job for a professional technician?

A rattling noise at startup often indicates a loose or unbalanced component in the fan assembly or a failing motor bearing. Given Dubai's climate, where ACs run for most of the year under heavy dust loads, wear and tear accelerates.

You can safely perform two checks yourself. First, turn the unit off completely at the circuit breaker. Inspect the indoor filter; a severely clogged filter can strain the entire system. Clean or replace it if needed. Second, check the external condenser unit on your balcony. Ensure it's free from excessive dust, leaves, or debris that could obstruct the fan. Do not attempt to open the external unit's casing.

If the noise persists after these steps, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The rattling suggests a mechanical issue that, if ignored, could lead to a complete compressor failure, especially before the peak summer demand. DEWA-regulated technicians are trained to handle refrigerants and electrical components safely, which is not a DIY task. They can identify and secure loose parts or diagnose a failing motor before it causes a costly breakdown.
