Safest way to remove black mould in Dubai kids' room?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I'm starting to worry. We live in an older building in Deira and I've just noticed a patch of black mould behind the wardrobe in their bedroom, which must have been there for ages. I'm really concerned this is what's making them sick. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of mould in a kid's room here in Dubai?

Black mould exposure can cause persistent coughing and respiratory irritation, especially in children. The safest removal method depends entirely on the size and type of mould. For a small patch (under one square foot) that you've just discovered, you can carefully clean it yourself, but for anything larger or if it's returning, a professional assessment is strongly recommended.

First, contain the area. Keep children and pets out of the room. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Open a window for ventilation if possible. For hard surfaces, a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mould-cleaning detergent is effective. Avoid bleach, as it mostly lightens the colour and doesn't prevent regrowth on porous surfaces. Scrub the area thoroughly and ensure it is completely dry afterwards.

However, in Dubai's climate, the visible mould is often just the tip of the iceberg. The high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mould growth inside walls or under flooring, particularly in older Deira buildings. Simply cleaning the surface won't solve a deeper moisture problem. The AC unit itself could be the source of the humidity and spores circulating in the room.

For a child's room with ongoing health symptoms, a professional inspection is the most effective course of action. They will identify the true moisture source—whether it's a plumbing leak, condensation from the AC, or rising damp—and assess the full extent of the growth. Remediation must address the root cause, or the mould will return quickly. A reputable provider will use containment barriers and HEPA filtration during removal to prevent spores from spreading throughout your home and should verify the cleanup with post-remediation testing.
