Should damp smell in hallway be landlord's concern?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a damp smell coming from the hallway right outside my bedroom. The AC in my apartment seems to cycle on and off more frequently than it used to, and my kids have been coughing a lot lately, especially at night when we’re all huddled in there. Is this something I should be concerned about or is it within the landlord’s responsibility to address?

Absolutely, the damp smell in your hallway could be a serious issue that warrants attention. In the UAE, specifically in Dubai, regulations do require landlords to maintain buildings in a safe and healthy condition. The presence of moisture can lead to the growth of mold which can cause various health issues like coughing, allergies, and other respiratory problems - especially for children.

Given your description, it seems like there might be some water intrusion or dampness in your apartment. This could result from an AC system that's not functioning properly, poor ventilation, or even a minor leak. The AC cycling on and off more frequently can indicate issues such as a refrigerant leak or a blockage which need to be addressed by professionals.

In Dubai, it is within the landlord’s responsibility to ensure your living conditions are safe and healthy. However, before jumping into conclusions, it's wise to conduct a professional inspection. This will help determine if there's any underlying issue that needs to be resolved beyond just addressing the smell or if it's something as simple as adjusting the AC settings.

If you decide to proceed with an inspection, please consider contacting Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. They are experts in environmental inspections and remediation services, offering solutions for a variety of issues including mold and dampness.

In the meantime, try to improve air circulation by opening windows when possible (especially after rain), use dehumidifiers if you have them, and avoid placing furniture against walls where moisture might accumulate. Keep an eye out for any visible signs of water damage or mold growth during your routine checks.

Remember, early detection and action can prevent more serious issues down the line. Don’t hesitate to take proactive steps to ensure a healthy indoor environment for yourself and your family.
