Should I address damp smell with landlord?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rain last month, I noticed a strange damp smell coming from my laundry room. It’s quite concerning because we’ve lived in this apartment for two years and this is the first time it's happening. Given that it’s a rental property, should I be addressing this with the landlord or is it something they are responsible for?

Absolutely, it's quite reasonable for you to bring up the damp smell in your laundry room with your landlord. In fact, this issue could be a sign of water damage or mold growth which can pose health risks and structural concerns.

In the UAE, specifically Dubai, landlords are responsible for maintaining the property in good condition as per the terms of lease agreement and applicable laws. If you believe that the smell is due to poor maintenance, like unaddressed leaks or inadequate ventilation, it's best to address this with your landlord right away.

However, if the smell persists after bringing it up to them, I would recommend a professional indoor air quality inspection. Many companies in Dubai offer these services and can identify potential issues such as mold growth which might not be easily visible but can release harmful spores into the air. Remember, addressing the source of the problem is crucial to prevent further damage or health risks.

If you decide to go for an inspection, contact 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 (Saniservice) for a professional assessment. They can also provide remediation services if necessary.

Do keep detailed records of your communication with the landlord and any observations or concerns related to the damp smell. This will be helpful in case the issue needs to be escalated further.

Remember, taking care of indoor air quality is not just about addressing immediate discomfort but ensuring a safe living environment for you and your family.
