Should I address the musty smell?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy storms we had last month, I noticed a strange damp smell coming from the bedroom closet. The AC in my apartment has been running extra hard lately too, but it doesn't seem to be helping much with the mustiness. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, so I’m wondering if it’s something I should address or if the landlord is responsible for addressing indoor air quality issues?

It sounds like you might be experiencing some indoor air quality issues, which is something that can happen after heavy storms. The musty smell and the fact that your AC isn't helping much are both red flags. In the UAE, especially in Dubai, it's not uncommon to see changes in humidity levels due to weather patterns or even construction activities nearby.

First off, i'd like to say don’t ignore this issue - it’s important for you and your family's health. The strange damp smell could be a sign of mold growth or moisture issues within the walls or closet. Given that you’ve lived there for two years but just noticed this problem, it suggests something may have changed in the building’s condition.

Now, here are some practical steps you can take:

1. Check for Visible Moisture: Look around your bedroom and check for any signs of water damage like discoloration or peeling paint on walls, ceilings, or floors.
2. Ventilation: Ensure that your closet has proper ventilation. Open windows if weather permits to let fresh air in. Using a dehumidifier can also help reduce moisture levels.
3. AC Maintenance: Clean and check the filters of your AC unit as dust and debris can affect its performance. If it's still not helping, it might be time for a professional service.

However, given that you've noticed this issue only now, I'd recommend contacting a professional environmental inspection company to do an assessment. This is particularly important in the UAE where regulations like those from the Dubai Municipality require buildings to maintain certain indoor air quality standards.

If you decide to go ahead with a professional inspection, i would suggest calling 800-MOLDS or emailing hello@saniservice.com for their expertise. They can identify any mold growth and provide remediation services if necessary. Early detection is key in managing these issues effectively.

Remember, indoor air quality directly impacts your health and comfort. Addressing the musty smell promptly could prevent more serious problems down the line.
