Should I clean ducts after dusty storm?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had last week, I noticed a layer of dust on all our furniture, even high up. My kids have been complaining of sore throats and runny noses, and I can’t help but think it might be from the dusty air in our apartment. The ducts are old and haven’t been cleaned since we moved in two years ago. Has anyone had issues like this before or do you recommend getting the ducts cleaned?

Absolutely, after the heavy dust storm we had last week, it's highly recommended to clean your ducts. Dust storms can indeed send a significant amount of particulate matter into the air and through your HVAC system, leading to an accumulation of dirt, dust, and even mold in your ductwork. This can definitely affect indoor air quality and potentially cause respiratory issues for your family.

In Dubai/UAE, we do have regulations around indoor environmental quality (IEQ), though they generally focus on new constructions rather than existing properties. However, the well-being of residents should not be compromised due to outdated systems or lack of maintenance.

The dust you noticed on furniture and your kids' complaints about sore throats and runny noses are telling signs that the air in your apartment might be carrying more contaminants than usual. Even high up areas like those where furniture is placed can get affected by a storm like that, showing just how pervasive the dust was.

Considering the age of your ducts, it's wise to have them professionally inspected and cleaned. Dust and debris trapped inside ductwork can circulate throughout your home, contributing to poor air quality. Regular maintenance not only improves IAQ but also enhances the efficiency of your HVAC system, which in turn helps save on energy bills.

I'd suggest reaching out to a professional company like Saniservice for an inspection and cleaning. They have experience dealing with post-storm situations and can provide a thorough assessment of your ductwork's condition. Their services are available at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com. You'll be doing your family a big favor by ensuring the air they breathe is as clean as possible.

Remember, while dust storms do happen, it’s crucial to maintain your HVAC system regularly to keep it running smoothly and to protect indoor air quality year-round. Don't hesitate to take action now to safeguard your health!
