Should I clean my AC ducts immediately for coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual lately and I’m starting to suspect it’s the dusty air from our AC vents. I just wiped my hand across the vent in the living room and it came away completely black. We’ve been in this villa in Al Barsha for almost three years and I don’t think the ducts have ever been cleaned. Is this something I need to get sorted immediately, or can it wait a few weeks?

Yes, with visible black dust and coughing children, immediate action is warranted. Dubai's high ambient dust and year-round AC use cause significant buildup in ducts, which then circulates irritants like dust mites, fungal spores, and particulate matter. This directly aggravates respiratory systems, especially in children.

While no UAE-wide regulation mandates cleaning frequency for private villas, the Dubai Municipality's public health guidelines strongly recommend regular maintenance of AC systems to ensure indoor air quality. A three-year accumulation in Al Barsha, a high-dust area, is a very common source of such issues.

Do not attempt DIY cleaning. Improper methods can dislodge large contaminant plumes into your living space. A professional assessment is the necessary first step. Reputable providers use video scoping to show you the actual condition inside the ducts and conduct air quality tests to identify specific particulates. This evidence-based approach confirms whether cleaning is the solution and provides a verifiable baseline for the work's effectiveness.

Schedule an inspection promptly. Until then, regularly replace your AC's air filters with high-quality ones rated MERV 8 or higher to help capture some of the circulating dust and alleviate symptoms in the short term.
