Should I clean my AC myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storms we had last week, I’ve noticed a lot of dust and debris on the floor of my living room. The AC unit in there seems to be spewing out some particularly dirty air. My apartment is about 3 months old, so it’s not like we just moved in or anything. Should I try cleaning this myself, or do you think it's better to hire a professional?

Absolutely understand your concern about the air quality and cleanliness of your new apartment. After those dust storms, it’s completely normal to notice a bit more debris floating around. However, given the specific context and location of Dubai/UAE, there are several factors you might want to consider before deciding on how to proceed with duct cleaning.

Firstly, in the UAE, especially within newer buildings like yours, there can be a higher incidence of dust due to construction processes or even the use of certain building materials. This makes regular maintenance crucial for optimal indoor air quality (IAQ). The UAE doesn’t have specific regulations mandating duct cleaning intervals, but it is recommended based on IAQ standards and guidelines.

Now, regarding your AC unit spewing out particularly dirty air, this could be an indication that the filters or even the system itself might need more than just a quick clean. In many cases, especially in newer buildings with complex HVAC systems, professional duct cleaning can make a significant difference. The dust you're seeing on the floor is likely coming from the vents, and if not addressed, it could lead to issues like reduced air flow or even potential mold growth.

For DIY efforts, yes, it’s possible to clean some parts of your AC system yourself. Filters should be checked and cleaned every 1-3 months depending on usage and environmental factors. However, when it comes to the ducts, which can be a complex network running through walls and floors, it might not be practical or safe for you to do so. Professional duct cleaning companies use specialized equipment designed to handle these intricate systems without causing damage.

Given that your apartment is only about 3 months old, I would recommend a professional inspection first. This will give you an idea of the current state of your HVAC system and whether it’s time for a thorough clean-up. Many professionals also offer maintenance packages which can help keep your system running smoothly and efficiently.

Remember, maintaining good IAQ in your home is crucial not just for comfort but also for health reasons. If you decide to hire a professional, make sure the company is licensed and has positive reviews from other clients. Also, consider asking about their methods and equipment they use; this will give you an idea of the level of service you can expect.
