Should I clean my AC unit or seek professional help?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storms we had last week, I noticed an awful musty smell coming from the central air conditioning unit in my living room. It’s been a couple of months since it was last cleaned, and I’m not sure if it needs professional help or if I can handle it myself. Has anyone here experienced this before and what did you do?

Cleaning your central AC unit after the recent dust storms is indeed important for maintaining indoor air quality and preventing unpleasant odors. Given the conditions we've been experiencing here in Dubai/UAE, it's understandable that you might be concerned about the musty smell emanating from your system.

Firstly, i would recommend having a professional inspection done if the smell persists or if you notice any visible dirt or debris inside the unit. Regulations like those outlined by the UAE’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MOEI) suggest regular maintenance to ensure air quality compliance in buildings here. A professional can identify potential issues that might not be immediately obvious, such as mold growth which is particularly common after dusty conditions.

That being said, if you're comfortable with DIY projects, you can certainly clean the exterior components yourself. Start by turning off your AC unit and unplugging it from the power source to ensure safety. Remove any visible dust or debris from the filter and external parts of the unit using a soft brush or vacuum cleaner set on low suction.

However, cleaning the evaporator coil inside the unit requires more caution. It's not recommended for homeowners to attempt this task as it can be hazardous if done improperly, especially with the risk of electrical shock. If you're unsure about your ability to handle it safely, it’s best to call in a professional service provider like Saniservice. They have the necessary expertise and tools to thoroughly clean and disinfect the unit without causing any damage.

By addressing this issue promptly, you can improve air quality in your home and avoid potential health issues related to dust and mold exposure. Remember, maintaining a healthy indoor environment is crucial, especially when we experience such extreme weather conditions as those we've had recently.
