Should I clean or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm last month, I’ve noticed an awful dry cough every time we vacuum or open windows. The AC in my apartment seems to circulate a lot of dust too. My kids have been complaining about itchy eyes and sneezing fits for days now. Should I just buy some air purifiers and cleaning supplies and try handling this myself, or should I call in a professional cleaner?

Absolutely, the situation you're facing is quite common in Dubai and the UAE during times of high dust. Given your symptoms and those of your kids, it seems like there's a significant amount of allergens in the air which could be causing these issues.

Firstly, it’s wise to consider an initial professional inspection before diving into cleaning yourself. Many companies offer free consultations that include testing for indoor pollutants such as mold, dust mites, and other allergens. This can give you a clear picture of what's really going on in your apartment.

In Dubai, the environment can be quite harsh due to sandstorms and the dry climate. These conditions can lead to an accumulation of fine particulates that are hard to control with regular cleaning alone. A professional cleaner will have tools and techniques tailored for such environments which might not be available or effective when you try it yourself. They also use products and methods approved by local regulations, ensuring safety and efficiency.

However, if you decide to tackle the situation on your own first, here are some steps:

1. Start by thoroughly cleaning surfaces like windowsills, window frames, baseboards, and ceiling fans where dust tends to accumulate.
2. Use a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter vacuum cleaner when doing deep cleanings of carpets or furniture. Regular vacuuming is key but make sure the vacuum has a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter for capturing small allergens and particles.
3. Consider investing in an air purifier with a HEPA filter to help remove airborne allergens, especially if you're experiencing symptoms even when not cleaning. In Dubai, where dust can be an issue throughout the year, this might be necessary even during non-dust storm periods.
4. Encourage your kids to use saline nasal sprays or eye drops as recommended by a doctor to alleviate their symptoms temporarily.

Remember, while DIY solutions are helpful, they may not address underlying issues that could worsen over time. If you notice no improvement after trying these steps for a few weeks, it might be best to call in a professional cleaner and possibly an indoor air quality specialist.
