Should i clean window streaks or is it management's job« Back to Previous Page

Our building just had its annual external window cleaning, but now there are these really stubborn, chalky white streaks all over the glass from the cleaning solution they used. It’s been over a week and they haven't washed it off, and my balcony views of the Marina are totally ruined. Am I supposed to clean this myself, or is it the landlord's or building management's responsibility to fix this?

This is the building management's responsibility to rectify, as the issue stems from their contracted cleaning service. The cleaning residue left behind is considered a defect in their work. In Dubai, your tenancy contract and building regulations typically place the maintenance of common areas and external building elements, including windows, under the management's purview.

You should formally notify the building management or owner's association in writing, detailing the issue and including photographs. Reference the date of the cleaning and state that the residue is obstructing your view and diminishing your enjoyment of the property. A polite but firm written request is the standard first step for resolution.

Attempting to clean it yourself is not advisable. The chalky residue is likely a dried, mineral-heavy cleaning solution specific to the UAE's hard water and is often alkaline. Using an incorrect DIY cleaning agent or technique can permanently etch the glass or damage any special coatings, making the problem far worse and potentially leaving you liable for the damage.

If the residue remains for an extended period, the high humidity and dust can bake it onto the glass surface. For a persistent issue that management is slow to address, a professional glass cleaning service with experience dealing with post-construction or post-cleaning residue can assess the correct, non-damaging method for removal.
