Should I complain to landlord about hallway odor?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a strange odor lingering in the hallway near the living room, and it seemed to be getting stronger. My roommate and I are both starting to experience mild respiratory issues that we think might be related. We’re not sure if the landlord is responsible for duct cleaning or if we should address this ourselves as part of regular maintenance. Should I bring this up with the landlord?

Hey there! Firstly, kudos to you for being proactive about the situation. The odor and respiratory issues you're experiencing are definitely concerning, especially given recent rain events which can lead to moisture build-up and potential mold growth.

In Dubai/UAE, it's important to note that while building regulations may not specifically mandate duct cleaning as a regular maintenance task, they do require landlords to ensure their properties maintain good indoor environmental quality. This includes addressing any issues like dampness or mold that could arise from water damage.

Given your symptoms and the lingering odor, I'd recommend scheduling a professional inspection first. A certified company can assess whether there's indeed a mold issue in your ducts or HVAC system. If so, it’s crucial to address this promptly as molds can release allergens and spores into the air leading to respiratory problems.

In terms of who should be responsible for the cleaning, you're right to consider both options. In many cases, landlords are expected to cover such maintenance services if they know about the issue or have been notified. However, it might also be a good idea to review your rental agreement; some contracts may explicitly detail responsibilities between landlord and tenant.

If you decide to bring this up with your landlord, here’s what I suggest:
1. Document everything: Take photos of the odor source, keep notes on when symptoms started, and possibly even record air quality issues.
2. Politely inform the landlord about your concerns and request a professional inspection or cleaning as needed.
3. Be prepared for various responses - some landlords may be more proactive than others.

Lastly, if you do need assistance with mold removal or remediation services, feel free to contact us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a professional consultation and service. Our team can help ensure your indoor environment is safe and healthy.

Remember, the key is to act quickly and address potential issues before they worsen. Take care!
