Should I get an air purifier or consult my landlord?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom has started to feel really stuffy and I've noticed a lot of dust collecting on surfaces, even though I clean regularly. I live in a high-rise near Dubai Marina and the humidity has been pretty high lately, which makes me wonder if that’s affecting the air quality in my apartment. I've only been here for about six months, but it didn't seem this bad at first. Am I responsible for getting an air purifier, or should I talk to my landlord about this issue?

It's understandable to feel concerned about indoor air quality, especially in a high-rise apartment near Dubai Marina, where humidity levels can fluctuate significantly. In your case, the stuffiness and accumulation of dust may be indicative of several issues that could be linked to both indoor and outdoor environmental factors.

Given the high humidity in Dubai, it’s important to ensure that your apartment has proper ventilation. High humidity can lead to mold growth, which can exacerbate respiratory issues and create an uncomfortable living environment. Regular cleaning is essential, but if you're noticing excessive dust even after cleaning, it might suggest that your HVAC system is not functioning optimally. Dust and allergens can circulate through poorly maintained air ducts or filters.

Before investing in an air purifier, I recommend discussing this issue with your landlord. As a tenant, it’s their responsibility to provide a habitable living environment, which includes addressing ventilation and air quality concerns. They may need to inspect the HVAC system, clean the ducts, or even assess the overall building's air quality. In the UAE, there are regulations set forth by the Dubai Municipality regarding indoor air quality and ventilation standards that landlords are obligated to follow.

If the landlord is unresponsive or if the situation does not improve after they’ve conducted an inspection, it may be worth considering a professional environmental inspection. This can help identify specific sources of indoor air pollution, such as mold, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), or other contaminants. In cases of severe indoor air quality issues, addressing the root cause is crucial rather than just relying on air purifiers, which are more of a supplementary solution.

In the meantime, you can take some steps to improve your indoor air quality. Ensure that windows are properly sealed to prevent outside dust and humidity from entering, and consider using a dehumidifier to manage moisture levels. Also, regular cleaning with a damp cloth can help reduce dust accumulation without stirring it into the air.

Ultimately, if you're looking for immediate relief and your landlord is unable or unwilling to address the issue promptly, investing in a good-quality air purifier can help improve the air quality in your bedroom. Look for models with HEPA filters that can effectively capture dust, allergens, and other particulates.
