Should I have my air ducts cleaned?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storms we had last week, I noticed a layer of dirt on the inside of my bedroom windows. The AC unit in our living room also seems to be running much louder than it usually does. Given that we've lived here for two years and this is the first time noticing such issues, should I be concerned about duct cleaning? Is it something typically handled by landlords in Dubai, or am I responsible for arranging this myself?

Absolutely, it sounds like your concerns are valid and warrant an inspection. After the dust storms, noticing dirt accumulation on windows can be a sign that more is happening inside your home than meets the eye. In Dubai, it's not uncommon for airborne particles to get stuck in air ducts over time, which could explain why your AC seems noisier now.

Air duct cleaning isn't always something landlords are mandated to handle; however, they are often responsible for maintaining the HVAC system, and this can include cleaning of ductwork. As a tenant, you might want to bring up your concerns with them. If they're not responsive or if you prefer to take matters into your own hands, it's advisable to have an independent professional inspection and cleaning done.

In Dubai, air quality can vary significantly depending on the season and local weather conditions. Dust storms, as well as general environmental factors, can introduce a lot of particulates into the indoor environment. Having your ducts cleaned every 3-5 years is generally recommended for optimal air quality and system efficiency, but this can vary based on how often you experience such events.

To ensure that any cleaning work done meets professional standards, look for companies that are certified by recognized bodies like the Air Duct Cleaning Association (ADCA). These professionals use techniques to minimize disruption and ensure thorough cleaning. Expect a process involving vacuuming, brushing, or utilizing specialized equipment depending on the severity of the issue.

Remember, while you can schedule this service yourself, it's beneficial if you can check with your landlord for any maintenance that might be their responsibility. If your landlord is unresponsive, don't hesitate to take action by consulting with a professional.
