Should I hire a professional for black, slimy bathroom grout?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the floor tiles in our Jumeirah villa's main bathroom has turned completely black and feels slimy, no matter how much I scrub it with bleach. I think the humidity from our showers has caused some serious mold or mildew. I'm worried it's a health issue for my family and that it's beyond what I can handle myself. Should I hire a professional grout cleaning service, and what would a reasonable price be for a bathroom of about 15 square meters?

That black, slimy grout is a classic sign of a deep-seated mould issue, and in Dubai's high-humidity environment, scrubbing with bleach only addresses the surface. The mould's root system (hyphae) has likely penetrated deep into the porous grout and possibly the substrate behind the tiles.

For a persistent case like this, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The constant humidity from showers, combined with our climate, creates a perfect environment for mould to thrive and recur without proper intervention. A reputable service will use industrial-grade, EPA-approved antimicrobial agents designed to penetrate and eradicate the mould colony at its source, not just bleach it white temporarily. They should also identify and address the underlying moisture source to prevent rapid regrowth.

Avoid any service that only offers a superficial scrub or promises a permanent "elimination." The goal is long-term control. Expect a thorough process that includes cleaning, a powerful disinfectant application, and often a sealing treatment to protect the grout from future moisture intrusion.

For a 15 sqm bathroom, the cost is not based on square footage alone but on the severity of the infestation, the type of tiles, and the extent of labour required. You should request an on-site assessment from a few providers to get a clear scope of work and a detailed quote. Any company worth hiring will be transparent about their process and the chemicals they use.
