Should I replace my AC filter myself or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom in Downtown has been super weak this week despite being on full blast. I finally checked the unit and the filter is completely caked in dust and sand. We just had all those sandstorms a few weeks back, so I guess that did it. Is it better to call my building's maintenance or can I just buy a specific filter myself from ACE and replace it?

Based on the extreme dust and sand we've had recently in Dubai, it's very common for filters to get completely clogged like you're describing. For a standard bedroom AC unit in an apartment, replacing the filter yourself is usually straightforward and can be done if you're comfortable.
First, check your unit's model number; you can often find compatible filters at ACE or other hardware stores. Make sure the new filter has a good MERV rating (8-11 is standard for residential) to handle our dusty environment. Shut the AC off completely at the thermostat before you slide the old filter out to avoid blowing all that dust into the system. However, a word of caution. If this is the first time it's been checked in a long time, or if the weak airflow persists after replacing the filter, there could be a more serious issue. A heavily clogged filter forces the fan motor to work much harder and can lead to coil freezing or other internal problems that need a professional touch. While you can DIY the filter, if you suspect any underlying issues or simply don't want the hassle, calling your building's maintenance is a perfectly good option. It's their responsibility to handle these requests. If they are unresponsive or you want a comprehensive check of the entire unit's health and hygiene, our team can provide a full inspection. For a professional assessment, especially if you notice any musty odors or suspect mold growth from potential moisture buildup, it's best to call in experts.
