Should I report mold to landlord?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a strange dampness in the common area of our coworking space, and it got me thinking about the cleaning responsibilities. Our office is on the second floor, right next to the kitchen area where people often keep their lunches and drinks. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed some mildew stains on the carpet near the entrance. Should I bring this up with my landlord or is this something that falls under our coworking agreement?

Absolutely, you should bring the mold issue to your landlord's attention. In Dubai and the UAE, landlords are generally responsible for maintaining the structural integrity of a property and ensuring it remains free from health hazards like mold.

Firstly, it’s important to assess the situation properly. Mold growth in a coworking space can be due to several factors including leaks, poor ventilation, or even humidity levels that aren't optimal. Given your workspace is on the second floor and next to a kitchen area, there's a higher chance of moisture issues from water leakage, splashes, or spills.

To address this, I’d recommend you take some pictures of the mildew stains near the entrance and document any other signs of dampness or mold growth. If it’s a small area, you can start by cleaning with a solution of bleach and water (1 part bleach to 9 parts water), scrubbing the affected area, and then rinsing thoroughly.

However, if the mold appears extensive, stubborn, or you're noticing health issues among colleagues due to its presence, I strongly suggest having a professional inspection. In Dubai, regulations mandate that landlords ensure properties are fit for habitation. The Emirates Building Control Department oversees these requirements and can provide guidance on what’s necessary in your case.

If you decide to move forward with an inspection or remediation, Saniservice is a reputable company based here in the UAE that offers professional mold testing and cleaning services. Their contact details: Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for more information.

Remember, it’s your right to work in an environment that is safe and healthy. Addressing this issue with your landlord promptly can help ensure a resolution before the situation worsens.
