Should I suspect mold due to musty smell?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains we had last month, I noticed a persistent musty smell in the bedroom upstairs. It's really starting to bother me because it’s always present even when no one is home. The kids have been coughing more frequently lately too, and I’m wondering if there might be something up with the ducts. Could this be a sign of mold growth? What should I do first?

Absolutely, the musty smell could be a telltale sign of mold growth. In the UAE, especially during periods like heavy rains, moisture can find its way into HVAC systems and ducts, creating an ideal environment for mold to thrive. This is particularly common in Dubai where humidity levels can increase.

Firstly, it's crucial to have your ducts professionally inspected. The regulations in the UAE, such as those outlined by the Department of Economic Development (DED) and the Building Control Department, require regular maintenance checks on HVAC systems to ensure they are free from contaminants that could affect indoor air quality. Mold can not only contribute to an unpleasant smell but also release spores into the air which can trigger allergies or exacerbate respiratory issues.

Given your concerns about the children's coughing, it’s advisable to act promptly. Call 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 for a thorough inspection and consultation with professionals who can assess the situation accurately. They will be able to identify if there is indeed mold growth within your ducts and provide necessary remediation services.

Meanwhile, you can take some immediate steps to reduce moisture in your home. Ensure that exhaust fans are working properly, particularly in bathrooms and kitchens where humidity is high. Also, consider using dehumidifiers if the area remains damp even with proper ventilation.

Remember, addressing mold issues quickly is key to maintaining a healthy indoor environment for both you and your family. Don’t hesitate to take action – the health of your home and loved ones should be prioritized!
