Should I worry about basement humidity?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains last month, I noticed a musty smell coming from the basement area of our apartment. The AC in this section seems to be struggling to keep up with the humidity, making the air feel stuffy and unbreathable. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed that my kids have been coughing more frequently since the rain. Should I be concerned about indoor air quality, or is this something the landlord should address?

Absolutely, humidity levels can indeed be a concern especially after heavy rains. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, we often experience sudden changes in weather patterns which can lead to higher moisture content in buildings. The musty smell and increased coughing your kids are experiencing could indicate an issue with indoor air quality due to excess humidity.

In the UAE, there's no specific law mandating indoor humidity levels, but it's generally advised to keep relative humidity between 40% - 60%. Exceeding this range can lead to mold growth and other health issues. The heavy rains last month could have caused water seepage into your basement which is now affecting the air quality.

Firstly, I would recommend checking if there are any visible signs of water damage or leaks in your apartment's basement. Look for damp patches on walls or floors, or any unusual discoloration that might indicate mold growth.

If you notice such signs, it’s important to act quickly. Mold can grow rapidly under humid conditions and poses serious health risks especially to children. Dubai’s climate is warm and often dry which means once moisture gets in, it can stick around for longer periods without evaporating easily.

Considering the situation, I suggest scheduling a professional inspection with a company like Saniservice who specialize in indoor environmental quality assessments. They will be able to provide you with accurate readings of humidity levels and identify any mold growth or other contaminants that may affect your family’s health.

In the meantime, try to improve air circulation by opening windows (if safe) during sunny spells to allow for some natural drying out. Use dehumidifiers if available in the basement area to help reduce moisture content. Regularly check and clean your AC unit filters as well to ensure they are working efficiently.

Remember, maintaining good indoor air quality is crucial for everyone's health, especially for children who may be more sensitive to these conditions. If you find that the situation isn’t improving or if symptoms persist, don't hesitate to contact your landlord or a professional service provider.
