Should I worry about duct smell?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy dust storm we had a few weeks ago, I noticed an unusually strong musty smell coming from the ducts in my bedroom. My landlord mentioned that the building is old, but hasn't done any maintenance like cleaning the ducts since we moved in two years ago. Should I be concerned about the air quality and is it something I should bring up with my landlord?

Absolutely, the smell from your ducts can be quite concerning. In Dubai and the UAE, it's important to understand that old buildings might have accumulated dust, mold spores, and other allergens over time, especially after a storm like the one you've experienced. This could definitely affect air quality in your bedroom.

Firstly, if the smell is musty, this can often indicate the presence of mold. Mold thrives in damp conditions which are more common in older buildings or areas that might not have adequate ventilation. In the UAE, especially during these recent storms, it's crucial to ensure proper maintenance and cleaning of HVAC systems, including ducts.

I would definitely recommend bringing up your concerns with your landlord. According to local regulations, property owners in the UAE need to maintain a safe environment for tenants which includes regular maintenance of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. While there isn't specific legislation mandating regular duct cleaning, it's strongly advised as part of routine building upkeep.

If the smell persists or if you notice any signs like discoloration in your vents or visible mold growth, I'd suggest contacting a professional for an inspection. In Dubai, companies like Saniservice are known to provide reliable and thorough duct cleaning services. They can help identify issues and ensure that your air quality is up to standard.

Remember, poor indoor air quality can lead to health problems such as allergies, asthma, and other respiratory issues. By addressing the issue now, you could prevent these potential health risks for yourself and any family members.

So, don't hesitate to discuss this with your landlord and consider having a professional inspection done. It’s important to ensure the air in your home is clean and safe, especially after such an event as a dust storm.
