Should I worry about mold growth?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new apartment a year ago, I’ve noticed an occasional musty smell coming from the bathroom vent. After the recent heavy rain, it seemed even stronger. My kids have been coughing more than usual, especially when the AC is on. The ducts in this area of the house are quite old and haven't been cleaned since we moved in. Should I be concerned about mold or other issues?

Absolutely, you should be concerned about mold growth. Mold can thrive in damp environments and old ductwork, especially after heavy rainfall like what we've experienced recently here in Dubai. Mold spores are common and can spread easily through your air conditioning system if there's a source of moisture or poor ventilation.
In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, our climate is warm with high humidity levels which make conditions perfect for mold growth. Old ductwork, especially those that haven’t been cleaned since moving into your new apartment, might have accumulated dirt, dust, and even some mold spores over time. When it rains heavily, like we had recently, the increased moisture can activate these dormant mold spores or create a new breeding ground. The musty smell you're experiencing from the bathroom vent could be a sign of mold growth within your ducts. Mold not only has an unpleasant odor but also produces allergens and other compounds that may lead to respiratory issues, especially for children and those with sensitivities or asthma—like what seems to be happening with your kids. Given the conditions in Dubai and the symptoms you're noticing, it would be wise to have a professional inspection. This will allow you to identify the source of mold growth and receive recommendations on how best to address it. You can reach out to Saniservice for an inspection by calling 800-MOLDS (66537) or emailing hello@saniservice.com. They are well-versed in UAE standards and regulations, ensuring that any remediation work is done in compliance with local laws like those found in the Dubai Municipality's guidelines on indoor environmental quality. Remember, prevention is key—regular duct cleaning can help avoid such issues. Until then, try to reduce moisture levels by using a dehumidifier or air purifier and ensure proper ventilation around the bathroom area to limit mold growth.
