Should landlord address damp basement?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a musty smell coming from the basement of my rented apartment. The AC in there seems to be doing nothing about it; in fact, it’s making the air feel even more damp. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed that our kids have been coughing a lot lately. Shouldn’t the landlord be responsible for addressing this issue?

Indoor air quality issues like the musty smell and dampness in your basement can indeed be concerning, especially given the increased coughing symptoms among your children. In the UAE, particularly in regions like Dubai, such conditions are regulated to ensure occupant health.

The first step is definitely for you to speak with your landlord regarding this issue. According to the Building Code of the UAE and specifically in Dubai, landlords are responsible for maintaining a safe living environment that meets certain standards. These include ensuring there's no moisture buildup or mold growth which could cause respiratory issues - especially among children.

However, it’s crucial to remember that while you have the right to request repairs, the landlord might need some evidence before they take action. Therefore, consider getting an independent professional inspection done. Local companies such as Saniservice can provide detailed reports on indoor air quality and identify if there's a significant mold or moisture issue.

If your kids are experiencing coughing spells that seem linked to this condition, it’s wise to consult with healthcare professionals for advice too. They may recommend allergy testing or other medical evaluations which can help in understanding the exact cause of their symptoms.

In case you find that the dampness is indeed a serious concern and the landlord isn’t taking action promptly, don't hesitate to reach out to local authorities like the Department of Municipalities and Urban Planning (DM&UP) who have the authority to intervene if necessary. They can provide guidance or even enforce regulations.

Call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for professional advice or a quick inspection. Remember, early intervention can prevent more serious health issues in your family.
