Should we notify landlord about mold?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a musty smell in the corner of my bedroom closet. My roommates and I are pretty sure it’s mold growing behind the wallpaper. We’re not quite sure about the responsibilities though—should we be handling this ourselves or should we notify our landlord? What would you recommend we do?

Absolutely, you should notify your landlord about the mold situation. In the UAE, including Dubai, there are certain regulations and responsibilities that come into play regarding maintenance and repairs, especially concerning health hazards like mold.

Firstly, it's important to know that mold growth in residential properties can pose serious health risks, particularly for people with allergies or respiratory issues. The musty smell you've noticed could be a sign of active mold colonies behind the wallpaper. Dubai’s Environmental Health Authority emphasizes regular maintenance and prompt action on any signs of water damage or mold.

While it's understandable to want to tackle this issue yourself, given the specific climate conditions in Dubai which can lead to higher humidity levels, it would be prudent to seek professional inspection first. This will help confirm if there is indeed mold and determine its extent. At Saniservice, we offer a free inspection service where our experts can evaluate your space and provide recommendations for remediation.

If you decide to proceed with a professional evaluation, simply call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an appointment. Our team will come by to assess the situation and determine if immediate action is necessary.

However, if you are not comfortable waiting for a professional assessment, there are steps you can take while waiting. Ensure proper ventilation in your room to reduce humidity levels which can encourage mold growth. Additionally, avoid touching or disturbing the area as this could spread spores throughout the space.

Remember, under Dubai’s Tenancy Law and the UAE Real Estate Agency Regulations, landlords have a responsibility to ensure that the property is safe and habitable for tenants. Thus, by reporting the issue, you are exercising your rights and helping maintain a healthy living environment.

In summary, while it might be tempting to clean up any mold yourself, given the potential health risks and legal obligations in place, a professional assessment is highly recommended before taking any action. Call us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for expert guidance and solutions.
