Should we worry about mold in our basement?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains last month, I noticed a musty smell coming from the basement storage area of our apartment. My kids have been complaining of sinus issues since then, and I’m worried it might be due to mold or mildew. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this smell, but no one in management seems concerned. Has anyone else experienced similar issues? What should we do about cleaning and addressing the potential infection in our basement storage area?

Absolutely, you should be concerned about the possibility of mold growth in your basement. In Dubai and UAE, it's crucial to address any potential issues promptly as excessive moisture can lead to serious health concerns. The heavy rains last month definitely increased the risk of mold developing, particularly if there was any water intrusion or inadequate ventilation.

Mold spores are everywhere, but they only grow when conditions are right - typically in damp areas with high humidity and poor air circulation. Considering your description of a musty smell and kids complaining of sinus issues post-rain, it’s very likely that mold has started to develop. Mold can release allergens and irritants which might exacerbate respiratory problems like those experienced by your children.

The UAE does have regulations concerning indoor environmental quality and mold remediation. The Building Code (EN 15237) sets standards for building design and construction, including moisture control measures that should be met to prevent mold growth. Additionally, the Health Regulations of the Ministry of Community Development, Tolerance and Deregulation also require buildings to maintain a safe environment free from harmful substances.

Given your situation, it's wise to take action now rather than waiting. It’s recommended you call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for a professional inspection. An expert can determine the extent of any mold growth and recommend appropriate cleaning procedures based on UAE standards. Depending on the level of contamination, they may also advise on necessary repairs to prevent future issues.

In the meantime, try to improve air circulation in your basement by opening windows (when weather permits) or installing a dehumidifier. Keep the area as dry as possible by addressing any leaks and ensuring proper drainage around your home.

Remember, early detection and remediation are key to minimizing health risks associated with mold exposure. Don't hesitate to seek professional help - it's better to be proactive than reactive when dealing with potential mold issues in your home.
