Strange chemical smell from closet: electrical AC issue?« Back to Previous Page

The master bedroom closet in my Jumeirah Park villa has started giving off a really strong, weird chemical smell, almost like burnt plastic. I first noticed it a couple of days ago, but it's getting worse and now it's seeping into the bedroom itself, especially when the AC kicks on. I've emptied the entire closet and can't find the source—no old electronics or anything that could be melting. Could this be an electrical issue with the AC unit's wiring inside the wall, and who should I call to diagnose it safely?

A persistent chemical smell resembling burnt plastic in your Jumeirah Park villa is a significant red flag and should be treated as a potential electrical fault until proven otherwise. Given that the smell intensifies with the AC cycle, the most probable source is overheating electrical components within the AC unit's wiring, fan motor, or capacitor, which may be housed in a duct or void space adjacent to that closet.

Your immediate action should be to turn off the AC circuit breaker for that specific unit to prevent any risk of fire. Do not operate the system until it has been inspected. For a suspected electrical issue of this nature, you need a certified HVAC technician, not a general handyman. The technician should be able to conduct a thermal imaging scan to identify overheating components that are not visible. In many cases, the issue is a failing motor or compromised wiring insulation, which is a known risk in our climate due to constant AC operation and high ambient temperatures.

While less likely since you've emptied the closet, also consider that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from stored items or even off-gassing from certain building materials can be concentrated and distributed by the AC system. However, the distinct burnt plastic odor strongly points to an electrical origin. A professional inspection is the only way to diagnose this safely. They will assess the AC unit, its electrical connections, and the associated ductwork to locate the source.
