What causes a sewage smell in my bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet has started giving off a really weird, damp, and almost sewage-like smell, especially when the AC kicks on. It’s been getting stronger over the past week and it’s so bad we’ve had to move to the guest room. We’re in an older villa in Al Barsha and I’m worried something might be wrong with the pipes or the AC drain. What could be causing this awful smell in the closet?

A sewage-like smell in a bedroom closet, especially when the AC turns on, typically points to a blocked or damaged AC condensate drain line. In Dubai's climate, AC units run constantly, producing significant condensate water. This water should drain away, but if the line is clogged with microbial growth (algae, sludge) or broken, stagnant water collects in the drain pan or inside the wall, producing that distinct damp, sewage odor which is then blown into the room.

Another strong possibility is a breach in your villa’s plumbing vent stack. This pipe allows sewer gases to escape through the roof. If it has a crack or loose connection inside the wall near your closet, those gases can seep into the enclosed space. The negative pressure created when your AC starts can pull these odors out more strongly.

For a villa in Al Barsha, start by inspecting the closet itself for any signs of water damage or dampness on the walls or floor, which could indicate a hidden leak. Check if the smell is strongest near the AC vent or a wall. Do not ignore this, as it often requires professional diagnosis. A licensed AC technician can inspect the drain line for blockages and test its flow. For a suspected plumbing issue, a specialist should conduct a smoke test to pinpoint leaks in the vent stack. Resolving the root cause is essential, as simply masking the smell won't fix the potential moisture or health hazard.
