What should I do about balcony mold?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a bit of mold growing on the ceiling of the balcony off my bedroom. The landlord mentioned that he handles cleaning in common areas but was unsure about balconies since they are private. Given this, I’m not sure if it’s on me to clean or if I should bring it up with him. Could someone advise on what is typical for a tenant in Dubai regarding balcony maintenance and cleaning?

First off, i'd like to address the issue of mold on your balcony ceiling. In dubai and the uae, there are no strict regulations about who is responsible for maintaining private balconies, but it's generally a good practice for tenants to take care of their own spaces, especially when it comes to moisture-related issues.

Given that you've noticed mold growth after the rain, here’s what i'd suggest:

Firstly, it would be wise to clean the area yourself. Mold can spread quickly and might cause health issues if left untreated. Use a mixture of bleach and water (1 cup of bleach per gallon of water) or a specialized mold cleaner from a local home improvement store. Make sure to wear gloves and protective eyewear during this process.

If the mold is confined to a small area, cleaning should solve the issue. However, for larger areas or if you're unsure about your ability to handle it, i'd recommend calling in a professional. At Saniservice, we offer both cleaning services as well as inspection for serious cases. Our team can assess the extent of the mold growth and provide remediation if necessary.

Regarding your landlord's response, typically in private areas like balconies, tenants are responsible for their own maintenance unless there’s an agreement stating otherwise. However, it's always a good idea to communicate with your landlord about any concerns or requests for help. You can mention that you're taking care of the issue but would appreciate his assistance if needed.

Remember, mold growth is often linked to moisture issues. Check for leaks in pipes or around windows and make sure there’s proper ventilation. Keeping the area dry will prevent future occurrences.

If you decide to go with a professional, don’t forget to ask about their credentials and experience dealing with such cases in dubai. Make sure they're licensed and insured.

Lastly, keep an eye on the condition of your balcony as mold can reappear if the root cause isn't addressed. Regular maintenance is key!
