What's causing black dust from my kids' AC?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our kids' bedroom in our Jumeirah villa seems to be blowing out a fine black dust that's settling on everything. Their white furniture has a grey film on it every few days and I'm worried it's affecting their allergies, which have been terrible lately. What could be causing this and who should I call to get it properly cleaned and inspected?

Black dust from an AC vent is almost always a sign of accumulated microbial growth, typically mould, being blown through the ductwork. In Dubai's climate, the combination of high humidity and constant condensation inside AC units creates an ideal environment for mould to thrive on dust and debris. The fine, soot-like particles are often spores and fungal fragments from growth on the cooling coil, in the drip pan, or lining the ducts themselves.
For a child's bedroom in a villa, this is a particular concern as it can significantly aggravate allergies and respiratory irritation. The first step is to stop using that specific unit until it can be inspected. A surface wipe of the vent is not sufficient; the entire system needs a professional assessment. You should call an indoor environmental quality specialist, not a general handyman, who uses diagnostic tools like borescopes to inspect inside the ducts and has the capability for proper remediation. The cleaning process must address the entire air path, not just visible parts. In many cases, the insulation lining the ducts is the source and may need replacement. For verification, a company with its own microbiology lab can test swab samples to identify the specific type of mould, which informs the correct remediation protocol. Ensure any company you hire follows NADCA's ACR standard for cleaning and can provide documented before-and-after evidence of the work, not just a visual inspection. After a proper deep clean, using higher MERV-rated filters can help capture more particulate matter and reduce the rate of recontamination. |
